Leadership Simplicity Insight... the Lateral!

So, What is Leadership Any Way?

A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am sure Dr. King’s quote can be interpreted to mean that consensus is a place were things are best for everyone… it is up to leadership to make this happen. So let’s take a look at who is and what types of leaders he may be talking about.

You know it is interesting to realize when we search the thesaurus leadership it returns synonyms such as management, control, guidance, headship, direction and governance! These words are what we call “industrial” type thinking and meanings of the word leadership… this is simplicity on the near side of complexity.

For now, it is important to know “Simplicity Insight on the Far Side of Complexity” is not about industrial type thinking at all! It is about leadership from within us—leadership should not be vertical but lateral.

So what is the difference… night and day? Vertical leadership is the words above which have to do with carrot and stick type leadership… or “the great jackass concept” of leadership. Give them the food out front on a stick and scare them from behind with another stick… carrot and stickum… that will get the job done and that is all that counts!

In contrast, having a reality of “Culture of Interdependence Fixated on Purpose” makes this type leadership impossible within that culture. The leadership must be lateral for this culture to function properly—leadership must come from each and every player within the community or organization.

Leadership begins with the roles we play, a coach, one who demonstrate leadership insight, ability to encourage motivation and can inspire others to contribute… to be the best leader possible and go the distance.

A lateral leader fixated on purpose is always ready to do the right thing, the right way for the right reason—is value driven, consciences directed and dedicated to moral purpose… and all this is principle centered.

Now you are saying, this is ok… but who in world can meet all these expectations? Great question!

First, only the person who is willing to look within themselves and be willing to start from the inside out will ever understand and learn to show lateral leadership. Second, a lateral leadership person must have and develop the ability to visualize paradigm models where the process is best for everyone… a “Culture of Interdependence Fixated on Purpose” is the model of simplicity beyond complexity to create opportunities for the best of the best.
